The TVS tube is also used in reverse direction, just like the regulator. Among them, VR is called the maximum turning voltage, which is the critical voltage before reverse breakdown. VB is the breakdown voltage, and its corresponding reverse current IT is generally 1 mA. VC is the maximum clamping voltage. When the peak current flowing through the TVS tube is a large current of IPP, the voltage at both ends of the tube will no longer rise. Therefore, TVS tube can always limit the port voltage of protected devices or devices in the effective area of VB to VC. Unlike the regulator, the number of IPP can reach hundreds of AMPS, and the clamping response time is only 1 x 10-12s. The maximum permissible pulse power of TVS is PM=VCIPP, and the larger the power consumption PM is, the greater the inrush current capacity will be when the maximum clamping voltage is given.

The similarities and differences between the steady pressure tube and the TVS tube
In the application of electronic system, the transient interference of voltage and current will often cause the damage of electronic equipment. The remarkable characteristic of transient interference is that the action time is very short, but the amplitude of the voltage is high and the transient energy is large, so it is very destructive. In order to prevent such damage, the TVS tube has been widely used. TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) is a high efficient circuit protection device developed on the basis of the voltage regulator technology. Its circuit symbol is the same as ordinary voltage diode, and the shape is also different from the ordinary two pole tube, when the two ends of the TVS tube stand high in the moment. In an energy shock, it can reduce its impedance at a very high speed (up to 1*10-12 seconds) and absorb a large current at the same time, clamping the voltage between the two ends on a predetermined value to ensure that the circuit elements behind the circuit are not damaged by the transient high energy impact.  In some precision electronic devices, TVS diodes are often seen as one of the main means of ESD protection.

As the common point of the two, they can both be used to stabilize the pressure, and all work in the reverse cut-off state, with the same positive characteristics as the ordinary diode, and the reverse characteristic is a typical PN junction avalanche device. But the TVS tube zener breakdown current is smaller, the voltage greater than the 10V is only 1mA, and the zener diode breakdown current is much larger than the zener diode, but the zener diode voltage regulation accuracy can be higher. Moreover, the TVS tube emphasizes transient response, so the time parameter is very important. That is to say, the response time of the diode is usually slower than that of the TVS tube. At the same time, the power of TVS tube is larger, and the power of regulator tube is smaller.
