Transient suppressor diode (TVS) is commonly used in electronic protection devices, and it is also one of the overvoltage protection devices. TVS tube is widely used in AC circuit, DC power supply protection, transistor circuit protection, integrated circuit operational amplifier protection and so on. The breakdown voltage of commonly used TVS diodes has a series of values from 5V to 550V. Generally speaking, RS-485 communication is used in the intelligent instrument industry. The following figure shows the typical application of RS-485 communication interface. When the RS-485 interface is not protected by static or surge damage, SMBJ5.0CA is usually used to protect the interface, as shown in Figure 3. When the static or surge voltage is higher than 5V, the SMBJ5.0CA will begin to move and clamp the voltage to a very low position. If the current exceeds the peak current IPP, the final voltage will be clamped around 9V. The device at the back level is not damaged.

Integrated operational amplifier is very sensitive to external electrical stress. Therefore, it is suggested that a SMBJ5.0CA tube be added to the output end of each regulator, which will greatly improve the reliability of the whole machine.
